East Chapel Hill works overtime for North Carolina Field Hockey Association title

East Chapel Hill High School defended their North Carolina Field Hockey Association championship with a thrilling double-overtime victory over Chapel Hill High School. The teams, which had split regular season games, also faced off in last year’s title game. After the Nov. 7 championship game ended in a 0-0 tie, the teams played a scoreless first overtime. Then, with less than two minutes left in the second sudden victory overtime, East Chapel Hill’s Katie Walter passed to Helen Newton, whose shot rebounded to Sophie Laas-Nesbitt, who then scored the game-winner. The Wildcats have now won six of the past nine titles. East Chapel Hill’s first year head coach Susan Taylor was named coach of the year. Earlier in the day, West Forsyth High School tipped Asheville High School 1-0 in overtime for third place.
