The 23 year old had a breakthrough second half of 2011, winning the Carol Weymuller Open and reaching the final of the Hong Kong Open. She started 2012 in equally formidable form by winning the Greenwich Open, beating New Zealand’s unseeded Joelle King in the final.

Raneem El Weleily triumphs at Greenwich Open all harrow final

The final of the Women's Professional Singles - The Glo Greenwich Open Sunday afternoon was a gripping display of high quality professional squash with World No.7 Raneem El Weleily from Egypt taking on the in form Kiwi - World No.11 Joelle King.

The match was a contrast of styles with King, in a show of strength, using powerful volleys and low thumping drives to unsettle her more fancied opponent El Weleily, who carries the classic attacking Egyptian traits of shooting from everywhere on the court.

The match began at a blistering pace with King pounding her length, determined to stamp her authority on proceedings. Raneem weathered the storm early, deftly moving King to the front routinely to keep her off balance and force an opening in the points.

The quality of squash cannot be understated with both players making some incredible recoveries to keep themselves in the rallies. Trading point for point in the first couple of games, El Weleily edged her way to a 2 games to zero lead by consistently finding the right attacking option as Joelle struggled to find her rhythm on the short ball against her more nimble opponent.

King regrouped in the third, getting off to a quick start courtesy of some uncharacteristic errors from the Egyptian and some well executed and timely volleys.

With the game score at 2-1 El Weleily, regrouped to structure her points much better, building her attack more patiently. A barrage of hold and flicks kept the tall Kiwi twisting and turning in the fourth as the Egyptian claimed her first Greenwich Open Title winning the admiration of an enthralled and appreciative gallery. King, a bridesmaid for the 2nd year in succession can take heart from a solid week and will no doubt be back again next year to hopefully make it third time lucky.

Gould and Mudge Show Their Class

Semi final action in the Chilton North American Open at the GCC saw defending champions - Ben Gould and Damien Mudge take on Johnny Smith and Preston Quick. The Aussie duo who are the defending NAO Champions were composed and calculated in their attack early in the match injecting the necessary pace at the right time to close the important points.

Despite Quick's clever angles and Smith's tenacity to stay in the points, the result was never in doubt as World No.1 pairing Gould/Mudge cruised to a 15/10, 15/8, 15/9 victory and book their place in tonight's final.

The second semi-final pitted four players who recently split and reformed with opposite playing partners. The familiar pairings of Leach/Jenson v Badan/Mathur were flipped upside down recently with Leach/Mathur now playing against Jenson/Badan.

The atmosphere was tense and the crowd intrigued as to who would come out on top with these newly formed pairings.

From the first point Jenson/Badan made their intentions very clear by keeping EVERY ball on the right wall to Leach. Mathur was completely shut out of the points helplessly looking on as Leach battled against an onslaught of high sweeping lobs mixed with power crosscourts from the opposition. This tactic bred success as Jenson/Badan took a 2-0 lead with Mathur only able to poach occasionally with deadly effect.

The third game saw Leech and Mathur control the points much better as the tournament drawcard Mathur finessed his way with a mix of power and clever angles to help his team to a 15-3 score. The forth game was a nail biter with the two teams going point for point until they were eventually tied 14-14. The final point was a series of drawn out tense, patient let calls until finally Mathur gave up an uncharacteristic error with a drop in the tin - perhaps the lack of action on the left wall contributing to his untimely error.

Jenson/Badan will need to be at their best tonight to trouble the top seeds of Mudge/Gould, but their impressive form should provide patrons with a fantastic spectacle tonight at the GCC.

Tania Bailey Wins Second and Sustains Injury at Manor Open

Englishsquash player Tania Bailey had to concede during the fifth and final matchagainst Sarah-Jane Perry (ENG) at the 2011 Manor Open due to an unknown injuryshe sustained during the fourth.

Aftersurpassing Belen Etchechoury (ARG), Nada Elkalaawy (EGY), and Birgit Coufal(AUT), Bailey found herself facing the eighty-third ranked Perry who won twomatches pushing the game into a fifth. But something was noticeably different aboutBailey who arduously chose to cut the match short, which meant taking homesecond-place.

Bailey isno stranger to injury having torn a hole in her knee last year during the 2011Women's World Team Championship in Palmerston, North New Zealand. The ensuingsurgery forced her to spend the majority of the year in recovery. Yet she managedto make a triumphant return in September at the Carol Weymuller Open where shewon first place and her sixth WISPA world title.

No news on the severityof her injury or how it will affect her early appearances on the 2012 WISPAWorld Tour schedule. Harrow Sports wishes her a speedy recovery.

Last month was an exciting time for Harrow’swomen squash players as a few managed to take home hard-earned titles, and manysucceeded in raising their Women’s International Squash Player’s Association World rankings.

Raneem El Weliely (EGY) continued to proveherself as runner-up to Nicol David (MAS)at the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open, where Kasey Brown managed to reach round two in thetournament, and number five on WISPA’s world rankings.

England’s Tania Bailey won her sixth WISPA titleand first tournament since 2009 at the Coronation London Open last week afterbreezing through Farah Abdel Mequid (EGY), Tesni Evans (WAL), Sarah-Jane Perry(ENG), and Cigany Sillevis (NED).

Harrow Sports Welcomes Chris Fuller

Harrow Sports is proud to announce that it has recently signed two-time British Junior Champion Chris Fuller as its newest sponsored squash player.

The 20-year-old athlete, who hails from Nottingham, UK has been a dedicated squash player since the age of 12 and quickly rose through the ranks to eventually join the Professional Squash Association’s world tour in November of 2009.

But Fuller’s ascent was not without a few setbacks. In 2005 and 2006 he sustained two injuries that kept him on the side lines for a short-time. Yet he managed to recover and win the British Junior Open under 17 category in 2006, and the British Junior Open under 19 category in 2009.

Thus far, his career highlights include being a 2 time European Junior Team Gold Medalist, Sao Paulo Open 2010 Semi Finalist, and Progetto Open 2010 Finalist.

Harrow Sports looks forward to supporting Fuller's promising career.

National Field Hockey Festival Starts Up

Hockey season is officially underway leaving little time for workouts between practices, games, and being on the road. So whatever workout an athlete manages to squeeze in must maximize time and productivity. That means, trading in endless sessions of pumping iron and aerobics for efficient workouts done twice a week.

These workouts should incorporate multi-joint strength movements combined with interval conditioning like strong man (aka strength athlete) maneuvers that work the entire body done medley style. Medley style, or circuit style, is when several targeted exercises are done one after the other with little rest time in between to build endurance.

Heavy leg training isn't always necessary because hockey players suffer the most losses in the areas of the upper body pushing and pulling strength while the legs manage to maintain their power. Therefore, the legs should only receive minor attention.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when training during the season, the eccentric or lowering portion of a lift can cause increased soreness. So as a preventative measure, consider replacing eccentric motions with partial lifts and sled training.

Finally, make sure to supplement main lifts with injury prevention work to protect vulnerable areas like shoulders, rotator cuffs, the lower back, groin, and forearms.

The 2011 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Squash Open wrapped up yesterday at the Hong Kong SquashCenter in China with exciting results for some of Harrow’s players.

Eighth-rankedRaneem El Weleily (EGY) managed to overtake Sina Wall (GER), Madeline Perry (IRL), Joey Chan (HKG), and Low Wee Wern (MAS) to reunite withher frequent rival, Nicol David (MAL) in the finals where she fought her way up to second place.

“I played a good tournament, she told Squash Stars it’sbeen a great weekend [and] I’m happy to be the runner up.”

What also makes the 22-year-old athlete happy is finally getting a break from the court—at leastfor a little while. “Now, I’m off for a while, a long long while,” she said. “Idon’t want to see a squash racket, a squash court, a ball, anyone. I just wantto have fun…and by the beginning of the year…we have two tournaments coming upin the US [so I’ll be] getting ready for those."

World Open Squash 2011 Wrap Up

The 2011 World Squash Open ended at the Luxor Theatre in Rotterdam, the Netherland’sCity of Sports yesterday with Malaysia’s Nicol David and England’s Nick Matthewtaking top honors on the awards podium—but before they got there, they had toput up quite a fight against a few of Harrow’s own.

It all beganduring round one where Raneem El Weleily (EGY) and Kasey Brown (AUS) bothswiftly won their respective matches to meet each other in round two. Butdespite El Weleily’s well-known ability to play the angles of the court to heradvantage, it was Brown who remained victorious 4/11, 11/7, 11/3, 6/11, 11/8.

But, unfortunatelyfor Brown, the quarter-finals was where her journey ended, which was a fewsteps further than that of Omneya Abdel Kawyu (EGY) who fell in round one toEgypt’s Kanzy El Dafrawy. But David admits going against Brown was not easy.

“The scoredoesn’t reflect how hard it was out there,” said David on the World Open Squashofficial website. “It was maybe 3-0, but it felt more like 5 or 6 gamesactually. Kasey had a very hard game yesterday, but still, she is such a strongplayer. She has stepped up her game so much, if you lower your guard ever soslightly, she gets on it.”

Teran and Grinham, Round 2

Meanwhile,Samantha Terán (MEX) was busy moving through the ranks past Tesni Evans (WAL)—11/5,11/3, 11/7; Rachael Grinham (AUS) –4/11, 11/2, 11/3, 12/10; and Dipika Pallikal(IND)—11/6, 11/8/ 11/9 to meet Jenny Duncalf (ENG) in the semi-finals. Duncalfmanaged to score 11/9, 11/4, 11/7, which put her in front of David who ended uptaking home her sixth World Open Squash Title.

As for themen, Chris Ryder (ENG) might have lost to Olli Touminen (FIN) in round one—8/11,11/4, 11/4, 11/4—but he didn’t lose his sense of humor.

“Off for my ‘loserburger’. Maybe a shandy too. Every cloud [has a silver lining]…” he posted onhis Twitter page shortly after the match.

Overall,Harrow’s-sponsored players put on a good show and will continue to do so asboth the WISPA and PSA world tours move forward

Samantha Terán (MEX) beats Rachel Grinham (AUS) 4/11, 11/2, 11/3, 12/10 at the World Squash Open in Rotterdam, Netherlands to advance to the quarter finals just days after her unpredictable victory at the XVI Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Last week, the well-seasoned 30-year-old player defeated new-comer Samantha Cornett (CAN) 11/6, 11/4, 11/6 to win her first gold medal in women’s singles and quickly won a second against Columbia in Women’s Doubles with Nayelly Hernandez (MEX) at her side. The victory automatically qualifies the U.S. for the London Games, and leaves Argentina scrambling next year to win a spot in pre-Olympic qualifying.

"Right now this team is in pain," said Luciana Aymar, considered to be the best player in the world. "The United States is not at our level, but they have improved a lot. These things happen to all teams."
Argentina has won the world title twice, including last year, while Aymar is a seven-time recipient of the game's world player of the year award. Las Leonas, as the team is known in Spanish, had never lost a game in Pan American play since the sport was included in 1987. The U.S. is ranked 13th.
After the win, the American women stood with their arms on each other's shoulders on the medal podium, and then raised joined hands to the sky when the United States was announced as the winner.
Aymar, meanwhile, wiped away tears, put her hand to her forehead and then stared at the ground. Eventually, she crossed her arms across her chest, the posture assumed by almost the entire team. A few stood with hands on hips, openly disgusted.
The Americans shocked Argentina with two early goals. Paige Selenski scored in the 12th minute and Shannon Taylor added another in the 15th. Maria Barrionuevo scored on a penalty corner in the 18th for Argentina, but O'Donnell made it 3-1.
Barrionuevo scored her second on a penalty in the 42nd before Michelle Vittese secured the win with a goal in the 66th.
"In our minds we never had the lead, it was always 0-0," U.S. captain Lauren Crandall said. "We were always fighting, always working. Argentina is capable of scoring three goals in a minute. We stayed focused to the end -- well let's say the last 5 seconds."
Crandall has been to London before, and she said her parents -- Amy and Tim Crandall of Doylestown, Penn. -- were already looking to book a hotel room just seconds after the match ended.
"I can guarantee you my mom is doing it right now," she said. "They are probably blowing up my phone right now."
The United States finished eighth at the 2008 Olympics, but Australian-born coach Lee Bodimeade figures this bunch could contend.
"Our goal is a medal in London," he said. "Now that we've beaten the world's No. 1 team, well, by definition we've got a chance."
The Americans play the South Americans several times a year, and in February the United States lost to Argentina 3-2 in the Four Nations tournament in Mendoza, Argentina.
"We play Argentina so often," Bodimeade said, "and we've been beaten often enough by them to know what works and what doesn't."

Harrow Syncro Hybrid Hockey Glove review

We gave player / coach Sean Bucher a pair of Syncro Hybrids and told him to put them through their paces. Check out his review below...

Like all hockey players I am extremely particular to the gear I use. The specifications have to be dead on for me to perform within the comforts of my game.

That being said, my experience with player equipment has been a lesson in trying to find a good mix of comfort and protection. I have used gear from numerous manufacturers when playing out (wing, defense) and coaching. I found myself sampling these different equipment manufacturers, particularly with gloves. I tried Eagle, Easton, Bauer, Reebok and Mission, but not one felt as comfortable as the Harrow Syncro-Hybrid.

Hands are everything in hockey, if the wrists can rotate properly and get the right amount of flex, it makes a world of difference when passing and shooting.

With all of that in mind, the Syncro-Hybrid is a great glove for the player looking for added flexibility without sacrificing protection. The glove blends traditional hockey protection with lacrosse style flexibility that other manufacturers have yet to spot.

The glove plays “game-ready” and gave me no issues with break-in time or discomfort on the ice. The first time I used the glove was for five hours of pre-season coaching. As the day progressed, the glove did not feel heavier or become water logged.

The lining of the glove aired out quickly in-between ice-makes and was not a hassle. It also allowed for a snug fit that was extremely comfortable to wear.

The leather in the palm is reinforced and mesh lined, allowing for both longevity and comfort. The leather did not (crust-up) like some gloves, creating rotten holes within the palm which make the hand susceptible to blisters or burns.

Despite the gloves higher wrist, the flex in the cuff allowed for ample wrist rotation while shooting.

I highly recommend this glove for a few different styles of player. This glove is a great choice for someone who prefers greater wrist coverage without sacrificing flex. If you like the old Gretzky style glove with high cuffs, then you’ll be impressed.

I would also recommend the glove to someone whom is transitioning from lacrosse to hockey and likes the flex and mobility of a lacrosse glove.

Overall, if you are tired of dealing with the same old stiff and uncomfortable options by the unimaginative brains that continue to release the same glove with a new graphic every year, then give the Syncro-Hybrid a try. It is easily the most comfortable and protective glove on the market today.

Not only did Weleily, who is one of Harrow’s sponsored squash players, finally overtake England’s Jennifer Duncalf to win the overall event— including the biggest prize of her career, but she also scored the highest ranking of her professional career, shooting from number 12 to seven [3] on the Women’s International Squash Player’s (WISPA) official world rankings.

Duncalf, who is Great Britain’s top female squash player and last year’s Carol Weymuller Open champion, was favored to win once again—that is, until Weleily arrived ready to take the lead.

Harrow racquet in hand, she went full-strength and managed to win all three games against the world number 2, at 11/7, 15/13 and 11/4.

Weleily is currently competing in the 2011 U.S. World Open from Oct. 2-3 in Philadelphia.

The United States defeated Wales and Australia by identical 3-0 scores
to remain unbeaten in pool play at the 2011 Women's World Junior
Squash Championships in Boston MA. With the victories, the U.S. now
moves on to the quarterfinals where they will face New Zealand today.

The U.S. lived up to their #2 overall seeding as they had no trouble
against their fellow Pool B opponents. Olivia Blatchford
continued to impress as she took no time in beating Hannah Davis,
11-3, 11-4, 11-4, while Haley Mendez needed just 16 minutes to beat
Jennifer Haley, 11-4, 11-7, 11-1.

In the night session, the U.S. did not skip a beat in sweeping
Australia. Blatchford struggled a bit against Bethany
Btazier in the first two games, before proving her dominance in game
three, winning 11-8, 11-8, 11-3.

U.S. Seeded to Meet Egypt in Team Finals as Pool Play Begins Today

Nour El Tayeb (r) defeated former champion Nour El Sherbini, 11-5, 3-11, 11-7, 11-8, to win the Women's World Junior Individual Squash Championship in Boston, MA. Tayeb, who had also reached the final the previous two years, losing to El Sherbinin in 2009, wasn't about to let her final crack the the world title get away, winning the final two games after El Sherbini had leveled the match at 1 all.

As in their previous meeting in the 2009 final, the first game went well for El Tayeb, who took an early lead of 4-1, extending it to 9-3 before closing out the game. But, again as it had in 2009, the second game went away from the top seed as 3/4 seed El Sherbini, still aged only 15, built up a 9-3 lead before taking the game to draw level. It was nip and tuck throughout the third and fourth games until two winners in a row brought El Tayeb her first match-ball at 10-7. A daring, but unsuccessful, long drop temporarily reduced the gap for El Sherbini, but when the underdog's boast later then clipped the tin, El Tayeb was finally able to celebrate her status as World Champion.

U.S. Seeded #2 as Pool Play Gets Underway

Team pool play begins today with the U.S. seeded to meet Egypt in the finals. The U.S. team will look to improve on their fourth place finish at the 2009 World Championships in Chennai, India.

The final will mark the second all-Egyptian world junior squash final in eight days after Marwan El Shorbagy took on Mohamed Abouelghar at the Junior Men's final in Belgium.

El Sherbini and El Tayeb have faced each other in tournament finals on three different occasions, with El Sherbini coming out on top twice, including the 2009 World Junior Championship singles final in Chennai, India.

The U.S. now sets their sights on the team competition, which will begin with pool play on Tuesday morning. Seeded # 2 overall, they will take on Guyana at 11:00 AM, followed by matches against Wales and Australia on Wednesday. Based on their pool play results, the U.S. would then advance to the knockout portion of the competition that begins Thursday and will conclude with the team finals on Saturday. Competing in the team event for the U.S. are Olivia Blatchford, and Hayley Mendez.

Harrow presents the first official National Club Championship 2011

For so long American field hockey has been missing one thing…a club championship. All over the world club field hockey has had a competitive league resulting in a play off and the crowning of a club champion. The honor of winning a national tournament brings pride and status to the respective club.

Playing for a club team during the off -season or during field hockey season can only be beneficial to any player, more playing time as well as exposure to playing with stronger players at a higher level. In turn club teams strengthen the grass root levels of field hockey in the United States.

So the first annual National Club Championship will be held in Richmond, Virginia from 21, July 2011- 24, July 2011. Guess who the official sponsors of the event is? HARROW obviously. There will be a Harrow booth where you can get all your field hockey necessities. Harrow will be selling official event merchandise as well as showcasing the brand new stick line favored by Rachel Dawson in the recent Champions Challenge.

BURNABY, BC (July 12, 2011) – The Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse team placed two players – freshman standout Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC / Gleneagle Secondary) and senior captain Luke Genereux (Port Coquitlam, BC / Terry Fox Secondary) - on the 2011 list of MCLA Scholar Athletes. Craig and Genereux are two of 45 players from MCLA Division I to receive this prestigious award given to players who were selected to their conference's First or Second All-Conference team, while maintaining a minimum overall cumulative GPA for the last completed semester/quarter of 3.20 or better. Twenty-seven institutions from the ninety-seven teams that compete in the MCLA Division I boasted Scholar Athletes in 2011, while Simon Fraser was one of only 10 schools with multiple recipients.

Craig, an attackman, recently concluded one of the greatest seasons in school history, leading the way for the Clan amassing 100 goals and 32 assists for 132 points in 17 games, topping the MCLA in goals-per-game (5.882) and finishing second in points-per-game (7.765). In only his freshman season, Craig became the first SFU player to score 100 goals in a season, also setting the single game records for both goals (15) and points (19). Craig was the only freshman on the MCLA All-America first or second team, in addition to being named PNCLL Freshman of the Year, PNCLL Offensive Player of the Year and to the PNCLL All-Conference First Team.

Genereux, a defenseman, was named an MCLA All-American for the second straight year after receiving honorable mention status last season. Genereux was also named a PNCLL First Team All-Conference selection for the third and final time in his collegiate career, after earning the same honor in both his freshman and junior year. In addition to his first MCLA Scholar Athlete Award, Genereux was also recently awarded standing on the Simon Fraser University President's Honour Roll. This award is for students who have completed at least 30 units at SFU, and have achieved a term GPA of 4.0 or above while taking at least 12 units of classes.

In seven seasons under current SFU Co-Head Coaches Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins, their teams have now produced eleven (11) MCLA Scholar Athletes, with 2011 marking the seventh straight season that a lacrosse student-athlete from Simon Fraser has received an MCLA Scholar Athlete Award.

Katrina Dowd earned two nicknames during her time at Northwestern - Trix, for her incredible stick skills, and Miss May, for her uncanny ability to play her best in the NCAA tournament. One highlight reel, game-tying goal embodies both of them.

When the Wildcats trailed Penn 12-11 in the first three minute overtime period of the 2009 semifinal, it looked like their run of four straight national titles would come to an end. But Dowd wouldn't let that happen. With seconds remaining, she picked up a loose ball and fired a no-look, falling down shot to the upper right corner.

"There were about 10 seconds to play, and on the draw control I was actually behind the line. Hannah (Nielsen) got it clean. I made a low cut, and I grabbed the loose ball, but I didn't know how much time I had left - it was probably around five seconds," said Dowd, now a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Denver and a brand manager at Harrow Sports.

"I took a far outside shot. It went right into the goalie's (Emily Szelest) stick, but the rebound popped out when Alex Frank got a piece of it. I made a dive at the ball, it fell into my stick and I put it on cage. Then I saw it in the back of the net, and I just knew that I got it off in time. After that, everyone kind of took a big deep breath. It was just kind of unbelievable."

Two minutes later, in sudden death, Frank buried the decisive goal.

Squash Canada announces three year deal with Harrow Sports

The College Squash Association and Harrow Sports are proud to announce the creation of a new award, the Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week. Each week, a deserving male and female player will be selected for this award.

A Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship.

Please note that it will be rare for a player to win the award multiple times in the same season. In addition, winning players may play on either a varsity or club team.

Harrow player Woody Clouse defends his US OPEN CPRT Championship title

Woody Clouse successfully defended his US OPEN CPRT Championship with a four game win over the upset minded Jeff Bell. Woody came out firing as aces and quick kills dominated game one 9-0 as Bell struggled to get used to the all-glass stadium court. Bell regrouped to take a 5-0 lead of his own in game two and cruised to a 9-5 win that seemed to get him into the match until Clouse turned up pace once again for a 9-2 win in game three. Up two games to one and sensing the title was his to take, Clouse served like he did in game one and repeated a 9-0 game to repeat as US OPEN Champion.

Harrow Sports and the College Squash Association Renew Sponsorship Agreement

Harrow Sports and the College Squash Association (CSA) have signed a three-year sponsorship agreement. This renewed agreement keeps Harrow Sports as the official equipment supplier of the CSA.

According to Shona Kerr, Women’s CSA President, “We are extremely excited to continue our sponsorship arrangement. Harrow’s squash gear has become a fixture in the college squash world.”

Ask most NHL players where they get their character and work ethic, and you'll hear warm and appreciative stories about moms and dads who drove them to hockey practices at five o'clock in the morning. Ask Zenon Konopka, the gritty and pugnacious fourth-line center of the New York Islanders, and he's got some story to tell about Zenon Konopka Sr.

"I play hockey and I scrap, and I guess people say I'm tough," said Konopka, who led the NHL last season with 33 fighting majors while a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "But my dad ... now, he was tough. There isn't any comparison between what I do as a hockey player and what his life was all about."

Konopka's Polish-born father was three years old when Germany and later Russia invaded Poland at the start of World War II. Russian soldiers came to his family's home and said they would be placed in a concentration camp in Siberia.

"The way I understand the story," said the Islander, "my father's family was left on a train to Siberia for two straight weeks before it moved an inch. People got sick. People died all around them before they even left Poland."

His family was not spared; Konopka had relatives who died of starvation.

His grandfather and uncle were given a choice after Germany split from Russia: if they joined the battle against the Nazis, the Konopka family would be relocated to a safe location in Africa. They went to war while Zenon Konopka's father and aunts lived in Africa.

"Two of my aunts are still alive," said Konopka. "They follow my hockey career and they'll always be an inspiration to me."

Sadly, his father did not live to see Konopka play with the Lightning -- or even his four years as a teenager with the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League.

"I was 13 years old," remembers Konopka, who was raised by his mother and father in Niagara-on-the-Lake. "I was supposed to go on a school trip to Quebec, but for some reason I couldn't understand, Dad insisted that I didn't go.

"He worked in a GM plant for 10 hours a day, but in the morning and at night, he worked on our family farm. One morning while I was sleeping, he was out on his tractor. He went to make a left turn on the road at the same time a car tried to pass him on the left. They crashed. My father fell out of the tractor, but the tractor landed on him and he passed away instantly."

Zenon Konopka Sr. was 58 years old. His son says it took him more than a decade before he could bring himself to discuss his death.

"It's still so hard," he says today. "My father was indestructible in my eyes. To me, he was the invincible man."

Zenon Konopka can talk about tragedy today because time has allowed him to see that his own story of a climb from the depths of the minors to the NHL is, in large part, a tale about his parents.

With his father gone, his mother Arlene ran the family farm with Zenon and his sisters before selling it when he left to play junior hockey. Through it all, Arlene still found time -- like most Canadian parents -- to drive Zenon to his hockey games and practices. The few lessons the young boy was unable to learn from his dad about work ethic, he saw every day in the actions of his mom. It's easy to see why Konopka never gave up on his NHL dream, a goal his father told everyone in Niagara-on-the-Lake was his destiny.

Those good years with the 67s did not earn Konopka an NHL or American League contract. He played for $300 a week in East Coast League in Wheeling, W.Va. He never stopped trying to reach the NHL. He won faceoffs and blocked shots, and if taking on every fighter who challenged or took liberties with a teammate in Wheeling or Scranton or Idaho or Cincinnati would also get the attention of scouts, it was a small price to pay.

"Courage is my grandfather and uncle fighting the Nazis, you know what I mean?" he says.

Six years into his pro career, Konopka finally started to get noticed and taken seriously. He played his first 23 NHL games with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 2005-06 season. The next year, he got an earnest look in the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, got in six NHL games and played for the aptly-named Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. On a team with a half-dozen guys willing to drop the gloves, Konopka could fight and play. After averaging 20 goals and 50 points over two full seasons in the AHL, the six-foot, 200-pound center got his first real chance in the NHL. In 74 games last season with Tampa Bay, Konopka had two goals, three assists and 265 penalty minutes.

The Islanders, admirers of his passion and grit for a while, gave him a one-way offer when he became an unrestricted free agent. More established in the NHL than he has ever been in his career, the 29-year-old Konopka isn't about to stop fighting and playing in memory of his father.

"I lost my dad when I was just 13 years old, but when I look back at those years, everything for him revolved around me," Konopka said the other day after an Islanders' practice. "I was talking to my older sisters about him a few years ago, asking them questions about dad. One of them joked, 'I think you knew him better than all of us. You were his life.' Katrina is one of the top lacrosse players in the nation. By graduation, she had won three division 1 national championships, bringing 77 goals and 109 points into her final year. Her 75 goals, thirteen assists and 88 points shattered her own previous records, earning her the title of 2009 NCAA tournament MVP and IWCLA first team all – American. Titles that were truly earned, Katrina is a three time NCAA all-tournament team selection, scoring a record 22 goals in the 2009 NCAA tournament.

2010 World Lacrosse Championship Wrap-up

We recently returned from the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England where we spent three days at our Harrow Lacrosse booth in the main sales tent. This event was extremely well run by the ELA and our hats go off to Monkhouse for creating a very welcoming and successful sales area for people to visit, shop for lacrosse gear and socialize.

In addition to the physical presence we had at the games, we were well represented by a number of top National lacrosse teams. Among the teams that Harrow Sports sponsored, spectators saw Japan, Italy, Suisse, Netherlands, Argentina, Slovakia, South Korea, and many masters lacrosse teams all sporting Harrow Gear and/or Apparel. The official Harrow lacrosse uniforms that were worn by team Argentina were some of the most complimented lacrosse uniforms at the event. All the teams looked great.

2010 Vail Lacrosse Shootout

Some exciting drama in the Supermasters winner’s bracket. The Quicksilver Elder Statesmen needed overtime to get past the Adidas Magic Wands 7-6 yesterday. It was a tight match today, tied 2-2 at the beginning of the second quarter. However, in the end, the Elder Statesmen prevailed in an 8-7 win!

Colorado Sidebar - Mt Bierstadt

As a transplant from the state of Ohio, I live in awe of the beautiful mountains surrounding us here at the Harrow Sports headquarters in Denver, CO every day. If you visit or move to Colorado and enjoy hiking, bagging a 14-er is almost a right of passage. This weekend I finally got to conquer MY first 14-er.

For those not familiar with the term, a "14-er" is a mountain exceeding 14,000 feet. Mount Bierstadt is one of Colorado’s most popular, and easiest fourteeners. Along with Mount Evans, Bierstadt is the closest 14'er to Denver. It’s not much more than an hour outside of Denver and the easiest route only requires a 3.25 mile, 2,391 foot ascent up a class 1 trail to reach the summit.

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves but if you are in Colorado for the Vail Lacrosse Shootout and enjoy hiking, I encourage you to feel the adrenaline rush yourself!

Upsets in Day 3 of WDIA – DI Play

The evening started with an epic battle between #3 seed Lindenwood and #7 BYU. Tied at halftime, it looked like BYU was posed to have the first upset victory of the evening. However, Lindenwoods defense shut out the Cougars for the final 21 minutes of the game, and held on to 12-9 win to advance to the semi-finals tonight.

There were nothing but upset victories for the rest of the evening. UCSB came out firing and took the early lead, but the stifling CSU defense came back and didn’t allow another goal for the final 19 minutes of the first half. CSU’s attack started to heat up, and helped the Rams to a 8-7 victory, and the right to face Lindenwood in tonight’s 8pm semi-final game.

Meanwhile, another upset was brewing on field 4. CU beat the #1 seeded and highly favored Santa Clara Mustangs. The Buffs defense held Santa Clara to under 10 goals for only the second time this season, and had the scoring support to win 12-9 and move on to the semi-final game at 6pm tonight.

The last game of the night ended in an over time battle between two California schools, #4 UC Davis and #5 Cal Poly. They split the two games played earlier this year, and were posed to battle to the end for the chance to play the Buffs. Over time was needed to decide the third meeting between the teams. Cal Poly, always a great National Tournament team, prevailed and will play CU this evening.

Division II Updates

SMU pulled off an upset victory over Oakland to move on to the semi-finals at 11am today vs #3 seed Loyola.

Two teams from the Golden State, USD and Cal, will battle in the other semi-final at 11. Follow us on Twitter to get updates on all the games this morning.

WDIA National Championship - Day 2

Day one finished with an overtime thriller. The CU/Georgia game proved to be a great match up. The Buffs scored in the second period of overtime with :24 seconds left to take the lead and the win over the Bulldogs.

Cal Poly prevailed over Texas. The Mustangs are always a threat to go to the Title Game with 7 WDIA Championships already.

West Chester lost to Santa Clara, but gave the #1 seed a tough first round battle.

UC Davis won easily over BC to begin their quest for a Championship at their first appearance at the WDIA National Tournament.

Lindenwood hung on to win over a tough Minnesota team to win by 3 goals, after being tied at half time.

BYU prevailed over Florida to send the Gators to the consolation bracket.

UCSB looked strong against the Ducks from Oregon to move on.

CSU upset VA Tech to knock the reigning champion from 2009. A new champ will be crowned for 2010!

Harrow Girls Lead USA into World Junior Semifinals

The US squad moved past Canada and England on its way to the Semifinals.

CHENNAI, India – The USA, seeded #5 going in to the Worlds and looking to improve on its best ever showing of 4th place, then did battle with #7 seed England. No English team had ever lost to the US in any event. . . until today. Amanda suffered a tough loss at the hands of a very talented English #2, but Julie Cerullo is proving to be the star of the team championships after notching another 3-0 match clinching victory.

Next up for Team USA is the #1 seeded team from Egypt.
